Day 4: London / Canterbury / London
After breakfast, depart for Canterbury, one of the most important spiritual sites of England. Drive through Kent's pasture land, known as the "Garden of England". In the Middle Ages this was the most heavily traveled road to England; the pilgrimage route to the shrine of the martyr Thomas Becket. His canonization in 1173 made the church a shrine for pilgrims from all over Europe. Other holy men, such as St. Augustine, St. Dunstan, and St. Alphege also inspired the dedication of monuments in their honor at Canterbury. We will have a guided tour of the Cathedral where you will see St. Becket’s Shrine. We see the ruins of St. Augustine's Abbey, burial place of Augustine, England's first Christian missionary in 597. Mass will be celebrated here. On route back to London, we visit Dover on the south coast and view the famous white cliffs. Dinner and overnight in London. (B, D)

Leave London and journey southwest to the beautiful cathedral town of Winchester. This beautiful cathedral has the longest nave in Europe. The relics of St. Hedda and of St. Swithin, Bishops of Winchester are probably buried under the shrine in the cathedral.
